Past Simple x Past Continuous

O Past Simple e o Past Continuous são tempos verbais usados para falar sobre ações no passado, mas com focos diferentes. O Past Simple descreve ações concluídas, ou seja, que começaram e terminaram no passado (“I studied yesterday”). Já o Past Continuous é usado para ações que estavam em progresso no passado, muitas vezes interrompidas por outra ação (“I was studying when the telephone rang”). A principal diferença é que o Past Simple foca na conclusão da ação, enquanto o Past Continuous destaca a continuidade ou o momento em que algo aconteceu. Past Simple

🔸​ Used with finished states, actions and habits in the past
Com estados e ações concluídas e hábitos no passado

Last year we visited Berlin.
Ano passado nós visitamos Berlim.

🔸​ Used with adjectives to identify feelings in the past
Usado com adjetivos para identificar sentimentos no passado

Emma and Anna were happy.
Emma e Anna estavam felizes.

🔸​ Series of completed actions in the past
Série de ações completadas no passado

He watched TV, studied English and played games.
Ele assistiu TV, estudou Inglês e jogou videogames.

Past Continuous

🔸​ Describes an action that was in progress at a specific moment in the past
Descreve uma ação que estava em progresso em um momento específico do passado

She was taking a shower at 8h30 am.
Ela estava tomando banho às 8h30 am.

Last night they were dancing together.
Na noite passada eles estavam dançando juntos.

🔸​ With Past Simple to talk about a finished action that happened while another activity was in progress
Com o Passado Simples para falar que uma ação ocorreu enquanto outra ação estava em progresso

He was sleeping when the telephone rang.
Ele estava dormindo quando o telefone tocou.

STRUCTURE

Past Simple

🔸​ Add d, ed or ied to all regular verbs in affirmatives

I/you/he/we/they liveD in Brazil.

🔸​ Use didn’t with the verbs in negatives

I/you/he/we/they didn’t like football.

(with auxiliary verb didn’t, the main verb (like) goes back to base form)

🔸​ Use did with the verbs in interrogatives

Did I/you/he/we/they enjoy the beach?

Past Continuous

🔸​ to be (past) + verb ING

I/he/she/it was sleeping at 6am yesterday.
You/we/they were sleeping at 6am yesterday.

🔸​ to be (past) + not + verb ING

I/he/she/it wasn’t working 3 days ago.
You/we/they weren’t working 3 days ago.

🔸​ to be (past) + noun + verb ING

Was I/he/she/it shopping last week?
Were you/we/they shopping last week?

WHEN X WHILE

🔸​ when & while are used to link Past Continuous with Past Simple
when & while são utilizados para ligar sentenças no Pat Simple a sentenças no Past Continuous

While I was getting ready to walk in the park it started to rain heavily.
Enquanto eu estava me arrumando para andar no parque começou a chover pesado.
When I was getting ready to walk in the park it started to rain heavily.
Quando eu estava me arrumando para andar no parque começou a chover pesado.

IMPORTANT: we generally use when or while before Past Continuous to describe an action or event that was in progress before something else happened
